2013

Downtown Light Pole Banner Project

The Downtown Light Pole Banner Project was initiated in 2010, and the Rodeo, Cowboy Poets Gathering, Sharlot Hall Museum, Phippen Museum, and the Smoki Museum (now the Museum of Indigenous People)  were asked to participate in the planning meetings to support the project. At that time, the project did not receive approval from the City Manager. The proposal was presented again in 2013, and received endorsements for the Prescott Chamber of Commerce, the Prescott City Council, and the Prescott Downtown Partnership.  The goal of the Light Pole Banner Project is to provide visitors and residents with information regarding specific attractions that can be easily seen while driving or walking through the downtown area. Most of the “Everybody’s Hometown banners were replaced with banners that promote our museums, major events, our trails, the rodeo, the Elk’s Theater, and other assets to the community. The City has a Light Pole Banner Policy available, if organizations are interested.

Thomas and Gallagher are co-chairman of the event that celebrated it’s fourth year in September, 2013.

Inaugural Western Heritage Recognition Dinner and Concert

The Prescott Western Heritage Foundation's Inaugural Western Heritage Recognition Dinner and Concert held recently was sold out due to the support of western business owners, ranchers, western artists, the rodeo, and many other organizations that help preserve and promote our western heritage. This invitation only event was held in the Hotel St. Michael's Ballroom on Historic Whiskey Row.

Those recognized this year include Gail Steiger, for entertaining and educating the public, locally and internationally, about cowboy and ranch life in the American west. Nancy Burgess, was recognized for the preservation of Prescott's Historic Buildings and our western heritage through her research, writing, and publications. The Yavapai Cowbelles were recognized for the organization's preservation of ranch life, and for their student scholarship program funded by their Quilt raffle ticked sales each year. Those recognized have made, and continue to make, significant contributions to the preservation of our history.

Entertainment included Gail Steiger, past recipient of the Gail Gardner award, and Mike Dunn, past recipient of the Gail Gardner and Will Rogers awards. Belinda Gail, the Western Music Association's Female Performer of the Year in 2012 was the headliner for the evening.

Another highlight of the evening was the unveiling of local western artist Steve Atkinson's painting of Tom Mix driving through the Granite Dells in his '37 Cord Phaeton Convertible. Bob White, of Cave Creek Arizona purchased the painting of the beautifully restored automobile. The car and it's history was a big hit when displayed in Prescott in mid-September. Proceeds from the signed "art poster" go to the Prescott Western Heritage Foundation.

2012

First Fundraiser

Picture
Our first fundraiser, the Prescott specific, Arizona Centennial/First Territorial Capital Medallion was a great success. Medallions were available at the Prescott "Best Fest" and were also offered at the "Best Fest AZ Centennial Celebration 2012" in Phoenix on February 11 & 12. We received incredible support through donations for the medallions, so it was a great introduction of our Foundation to the community. Both Jenny Longhorn Western Boutique and Black Arrow Indian Art donated their time and effort to take donations for the medallions at their stores because they believe in the Foundation's goals.

Downtown Lighting Project

PictureOriginal funding for the roof line lights on the buildings surrounding the Courthouse Plaza.
Our Foundation donated $5,000.00 to the Chamber of Commerce and Prescott Downtown Partnership to pay for the purchase and installation of the LED lighting, which outlines the rooftops of buildings around the downtown square. We have received endorsement letters from the Prescott City Council & Mayor, the Prescott Chamber of Commerce, and the Prescott Downtown Partnership supporting our request to leave these lights on at night year round.  (See more endorsements.)

2010

Prescott Western Heritage Foundation Formed

Foundation formed as a 501(c)(3) in early 2011 based on a proposal called "Partnering for Success" that was written and presented as early as January 2010. A Board of Directors was established in early 2011 that believe strongly in the following mission statement: "Preserve and promote our western heritage through education, events, art, music, and projects that enhance our western lifestyle, making Prescott a unique place to live & visit."
